About Me
Hello, my name is Becky Pilcher, and I am a returning student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) where I am pursuing my Associate of Arts degree. I currently work for my tribal government and hope to further my career by expanding my knowledge and experience through education. I was born and raised in Southeast Alaska where I graduated from High School. I briefly attended Portland State University before transferring to UAF. I resided in Fairbanks Alaska for two years before leaving and spending four years living between five different addresses ranging from southwest Oklahoma to Nashville, Tennessee due to my spouse’s employment. In this time, I experienced different cultural practices, I learned to appreciate my home and family in new ways, I made connections with people from all over the world. It was a time I valued. Now I spend my days back in Southeast Alaska with my husband, five-year-old, and two cats. If I’m not working or studying, I can normally be found cooking, watching Food Network, making cold brew coffee, gardening, watching Historical English Royal Documentaries, beading, sewing, or wandering the house completing tiresome yet never-ending list of chores that keep a household running.
I hear you on that list of chores!!! Loved what you had to say about living in different places. I have a quote from travel personality - Rick Steves - “Travel is rich with learning opportunities, and the ultimate souvenir is a broader perspective.” I have seen some fabulous art during my travels. The one that surprised me the most was how modern art was government supported in the former country called Yugoslavia. Not what I expected from a communist style government.
ReplyDeleteYour ability to distinguish various art styles throughout the places you've lived is remarkable! Traditional and cultural art are the pieces that attract me the most. I had the opportunity to attend the Woman's Affairs that was hosted in Fairbanks and the experience was mind-blowing, it expanded my perspective on what is considered "Art". The patterns and colors on art pieces play an important factor in representing and advocating the story behind it, which I believe is main component of each piece.
ReplyDeleteI think we could be great friends. I too traveled a lot with my ex-husband's job. Wasn't great at art in my younger years until I found the medium I love and am a huge fan of food network, coffee, and Renoir! I am also a huge fan of Gilmore Girls.
ReplyDeleteDoing this with a family ain't easy. I've got three of my own, and we have 3 dogs on top of that.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Sitka for a while, I went to Mt. Edgecumbe High School. Then a charter fished out of Sitka for a couple seasons after that. I didn't appreciate art at the time either, and am still pretty shallow about it. The items I find most artful are also very useful. I sew fur hats and mitts from fur I catch, and I dabble in leather work as well.
That painting is pretty interesting. The focus seems like it's the girls face, everything else from there is slightly blurred. She seems a little ambivalent about her predicament, like maybe she doesn't really want to be dancing with him.
Going to School with a family is something that I have sometimes struggle with due to the time commitments for school and also taking time for the family. I live in Ketchikan for two years back in the early 2000's. I loved my time there but I got island fever because there was not a lot of stuff to do and it also rained a lot. I like how you talk about the meeting local artist.

DeleteThank you for sharing. Looks like you've lived in a lot of places and have a lot of experiences and inspiration to use. Can't wait to read more of your blogs. My relation to art is similar to yours and I feel like I have a lot to learn. I had those basics art classes in middle school in high school but was never a standout in any of those.
